To the Bishops.

Andronicus of Berenice — let no one call him a Christian, for he was born, raised, and grew up to be the evil destiny of Pentapolis, having seized the government of his country for his own profit — is accursed of God. Let him and his entire household be expelled from every church.

The reason is not merely that he has been the deadliest enemy of every upright citizen, not merely that he has killed, imprisoned, tortured, and robbed — but that he has done all this while professing to be a Christian. He has mocked the sanctuary and treated the Church's intercessions with contempt.

[The letter formally announces the excommunication decreed in Letter 57, instructing all the bishops of the province to enforce it. It is Synesius at his most forceful — the reluctant bishop who never wanted the office now wielding its ultimate sanction.]
