Letter 28

UnknownOmmatius, spiritual son|c. 496 AD|ruricius limoges
From: Ruricius, bishop of Limoges
To: Ommatius
Date: ~496 AD
Context: A warm letter of farewell after a visit, with the characteristic late antique theme of friends parting in body but remaining united in heart.

Bishop Ruricius to his dear Ommatius — greetings.

I left your company in such a way that I did not truly leave you at all. I presented you with the same part of my inner self in which I remained with you. I know I remain there still — a place from which neither the ancient tempter nor any recent mediator could dislodge me. I remind you with the words of the wisest Solomon: "My son, keep your father's commandments" [Proverbs 6:20].
