Letter 22

Hilary of RomeUnknown|pope hilary
From: Pope Hilary, bishop of Rome (Synodal Decree)
To: The Church assembled at Rome
Date: ~465 AD (November 19)
Context: Pope Hilary's letter 15; the synodal decree of the Roman synod of 465, one of the best documented Roman synods of the fifth century, covering three main areas of church discipline.

The synodal decree of Pope Hilary.

I. The synod was held in the basilica of blessed Mary.
II. The address of Pope Hilary to the same assembly.
III. The first letter of Ascanius and all the [other bishops who were present].

Summary of decrees:

On episcopal ordination: no bishop is to be consecrated unless three bishops of the relevant province participate, with the metropolitan presiding. Ordinations performed otherwise are irregular.

On the translation of bishops: a bishop once installed in his see is not to be transferred to another without grave cause and without the authorization of this apostolic see. The ambition that seeks richer or more prominent sees is to be condemned, not accommodated.

On those who have contracted second marriages: a man who has been twice married — either because his first wife died and he remarried, or because his wife had been previously married — may not be admitted to clerical orders of any kind. This is the explicit teaching of the apostle and is not subject to local dispensation.

These decrees are issued with the authority of the Roman synod.
