Letter 5

Anastasius IIUnknown|pope anastasius ii
From: The Alexandrian apocrisiarii (church representatives)
To: [Roman and Constantinopolitan officials]
Date: ~497 AD
Context: Pope Anastasius II, letter 5; a libellus (formal submission) from the Alexandrian church's representatives in Rome, presented to officials in Constantinople, seeking reconciliation with the Catholic church.

The libellus presented by the apocrisiarii [formal representatives] of the Alexandrian church to the legates dispatched from Rome to Constantinople.

To the most glorious and excellent patrician [name], the apocrisiarii of the Alexandrian church present the following:

The church of Alexandria desires full communion with the apostolic see of Rome and with the orthodox Catholic church. The divisions that have afflicted us for so many years have brought suffering to the faithful and have undermined the witness of the church in a world that needs that witness.

We ask therefore that the conditions for reconciliation be discussed — not as demands to be rejected but as the expression of what full communion requires. The apostolic see has stated those conditions clearly. We ask that they be discussed in a spirit of genuine inquiry rather than as ultimatums or as negotiating positions.

We believe that full reconciliation is possible, and we approach this conversation with that belief. We ask that our counterparts in Rome and Constantinople approach it with the same.

The apocrisiarii of Alexandria, submitted in the hope of peace.
