Letter 3

Anastasius IIUnknown|pope anastasius ii
From: Pope Anastasius II, bishop of Rome
To: Lawrence, Bishop of Lignido
Date: ~497 AD
Context: Pope Anastasius II, letter 3; written at the beginning of his pontificate, following the customary practice of new popes to send a formal statement of faith to Eastern bishops.

Anastasius II, bishop of Rome, to Lawrence, bishop of Lignido, greetings.

At the beginning of a pontificate it is the established custom of the bishops of Rome to send to the churches of both East and West a formal statement of the faith we hold and intend to maintain, following the practice of our predecessors. I send you this statement as part of that customary communication.

The faith I profess is the faith of the Council of Chalcedon: that our Lord Jesus Christ is true God and true man, one person in two natures, divine and human, united without confusion, change, division, or separation. This is the faith of the apostles as the councils have defined it, and it is the faith I will defend throughout my pontificate.

I write to you specifically because the see of Lignido stands at a point where the Eastern and Western churches come into close contact, and because those who serve in such positions need to know clearly where the bishop of Rome stands on the questions that have caused such distress to the church in recent years.

I also wish to express my genuine desire for the healing of the schism that has afflicted us since the time of Acacius. That healing must come through the acceptance of Chalcedon, not through its abandonment. On this I am clear.

Anastasius, bishop of Rome
