Letter 7

Pope Pelagius IIUnknown|c. 585 AD|pelagius ii
From: Pope Pelagius II, bishop of Rome
To: Aunarius, Bishop of Auxerre
Date: ~585 AD
Context: Pope Pelagius II, letter 7; a second letter to Aunarius, affirming the unity of the church and the importance of maintaining communion with the apostolic see.

To the most beloved brother Aunarius, Pelagius, bishop of the city of Rome.

How much the fellowship Christians show in venerating the authority of the apostolic see makes you pleasing to God, so much more fruitful for him whose see it is does your charity's trust become. And we confess one and the same Church of God in no other way than by being of one mind together in the bond of charity with the See of the Blessed Apostle Peter, from whose foundation the rock of the universal church solidly rises.

For it is written: "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." And in another place: "Feed my sheep." These words were addressed to one; the authority of the whole church flows through that one. Not because other bishops lack authority, but because the unity of the church is expressed and maintained through the connection with the apostolic see from which the church's unity derives.

I therefore urge you, beloved brother, to maintain this communion diligently, to teach those under your care the importance of unity with Rome, and to be on your guard against those who, under whatever pretext, seek to draw Christians away from the bond of Catholic communion.

The relics I am sending to you come with my blessing and my prayer for your continued faithful ministry.

Pelagius, bishop of Rome
