Letter 94

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: An inquirer
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore explains how Scripture supports the doctrine of the Trinity.

In Holy Scripture, expressions that go beyond the singular number indicate the distinction of the persons; expressions in the singular indicate the unity of the nature. The plural forms were spoken to silence Sabellius and the Jews [who collapsed the Trinity into one person]; the singular forms were spoken to refute Arius, Eunomius, and the pagans [who divided the Godhead into many]. Scripture speaks with precision — if you read carefully, you will find both truths held together: one nature, three persons.
