Letter 59

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: An unnamed person
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore mocks someone who boasts of physical size.

If you imagine that being tall makes you greater than other people, the giant Nimrod far surpassed you, as did the giants of Astaroth, and Goliath the Philistine, and Saul who stood head and shoulders above all Israel. But none of them were the better for it. Height of body is no measure of the soul. A tall fool is still a fool — just easier to spot. Pursue the stature that matters: the growth of the inner person into the fullness of Christ.
