Letter 52

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: An unnamed recipient
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore on preparing for spiritual warfare before danger strikes.

It is good to gird your loins before dangers come, to serve God, and to strike down the opposing ranks by faith rather than to grow slack and be exposed to enemies. Since we have reached such a state of recklessness that we do not even have time to serve God properly — the surrounding evils do not allow us to admire our defensive weapons — remember that even Phinehas used a spear when God was provoked to anger [Numbers 25:7-8]. There is a time for patience and a time for decisive action. Knowing the difference is half of wisdom.
