Letter 493

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk at Pelusium
To: Aroionios
Date: ~410 AD
Context: A brief note on the relationship between virtue and reputation — virtue is its own vindication, independent of what others say about it.

Virtue is its own witness, Aroionios. It does not require defense, and it does not require the agreement of those who happen to observe it. The man who has done right needs no advocate. Truth vindicates itself, given time.

Do not be disturbed by those who misrepresent you. Continue in what is right. The misrepresentation will not stand indefinitely against the evidence of your actual conduct.
