Letter 28

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: An unnamed cleric
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore attacks those who presume to teach theology while living badly.

It goes beyond all audacity to make theological pronouncements when your life contradicts the faith you claim to uphold. Not everyone has the right to theologize, my friend. It is not a matter of cleverness or education — it is a matter of life. The person whose conduct is a scandal has forfeited the right to instruct others. You cannot teach purity while practicing impurity. You cannot preach detachment while accumulating wealth. The words may be correct, but coming from your mouth they are a lie — not because the doctrine is false, but because you are.
