Letter 236

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk at Pelusium
To: Heron the Presbyter
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore on the duty to call on God when human strength fails — arguing that this is not weakness but wisdom.

When your own strength fails — as it will — calling on God is not weakness. The weakness is in refusing to call on him, which is the false pride of the person who would rather fail alone than succeed with help.

The saints who accomplished the most were the most convinced of their own insufficiency. This is not coincidence. The person who knows his resources are limited looks for resources beyond himself. The person who overestimates his resources stops looking and eventually runs out.
