Letter 173

Isidore of PelusiumPeter|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk at Pelusium
To: Peter
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore encourages someone who has fallen repeatedly, pointing to those who eventually prevailed against the very passions that had previously overcome them.

They stood firm against the passions — the very passions they had previously acknowledged defeat against. So if you too have fallen many times, acknowledge it honestly. The man who admits his weakness has already begun to fight it. The man who denies it has already lost.

The one who has fallen and risen again has information about the struggle that the one who never fell does not have. Use it.

Modern English rendering for readability. See the 19th-century translation or original Latin/Greek for scholarly use.
