Letter 1533

Isidore of PelusiumUnknown|isidore pelusium
From: Isidore of Pelusium, monk
To: An unnamed person
Date: ~410 AD
Context: Isidore urges his reader to embrace moderation, since human nature carries nothing extraordinary of its own.

Since our nature has nothing inherently noble or extraordinary, let us lead it toward the moderate and the fitting — which are, in fact, its proper goods. Pride in what is not truly ours is the source of most of our destruction. The man who knows that he is neither more nor less than human is the one best equipped to become something more.
