Letter 56

HormisdasMontana and Thomas|hormisdas
From: Pope Hormisdas, Rome
To: Thomas and Nicostratus, bishops
Date: ~519 AD
Context: Hormisdas consoles two Roman bishops who have been mistreated in Constantinople, assuring them he is working on their behalf.

Hormisdas to the Bishops Thomas and Nicostratus.

Do not think our mind is idle or indifferent regarding your case, for we think of your hardship no differently than we would our own. Through Mena, the notary of our church, we have learned that your love is still enduring the vexations of surveillance. Therefore, so that almighty God may deign to provide a remedy for these adversities, we have sent letters both to our brother and fellow bishop John and to our son the most illustrious Justinian.
