Letter 52

HormisdasHormisdas, Rome|hormisdas
From: A papal legate [likely the deacon Dioscorus, one of the legates sent to Constantinople]
To: Hormisdas, Pope of Rome
Date: ~519 AD
Context: A travel report from one of the papal legates describing their journey east — through Aulon (Albania), Scampis, and Lychidus (Ohrid) to Thessalonica — a rare firsthand account of diplomatic travel in the early sixth century.

The unspeakable mercy of almighty God and His kindness, which He mercifully pours out upon the human race, cannot be measured by human strength or expressed in words. It is enough simply to wonder at His marvels with devoted hearts and to know that all good things hang upon the remedies of His grace alone.

This is proven every day. Yet I venture to say, my most blessed lord and pope, that the present cause surpasses all that came before — a cause which God has reserved for your times and your merits.

What happened at Aulon, what at Scampis, what followed at Lychidus — I reported in my earlier dispatch. We have now arrived at Thessalonica. The reception we encountered there, the difficulties we faced, the negotiations we conducted — all this I set before you in this account.

[The letter continues with a detailed narrative of the legation's progress through the Balkans, documenting both the enthusiasm for reunion among the orthodox and the resistance from those still loyal to the schismatic party.]

Modern English rendering for readability. See the 19th-century translation or original Latin/Greek for scholarly use.
