HormisdasJustinian, comes|hormisdas
From: Hormisdas, Pope of Rome
To: Justinian, comes [the future Emperor Justinian I]
Date: ~519 AD (January)
Context: Hormisdas replies to the future Justinian, acknowledging his crucial role in the reunion and offering guidance on the remaining steps — particularly the need for all Eastern bishops to sign the Formula of Hormisdas.

Hormisdas to Justinian.

I received your letter with the joy that befits its contents: the power of true religion is at work, and the gratitude I owe for so welcome a devotion can hardly be expressed. We give thanks to our Lord, who has given you both the occasion and the spirit for so splendid a remedy.

We recognize that these things are ordained from above, since divine majesty has bestowed imperial power upon one who considers himself appointed for the purpose of restoring peace to the churches. What remains, then, is for all the bishops of the Eastern regions to testify, in accordance with the form of the libellus [the Formula of Hormisdas], that they have arrived at the full effect of correction.

The path to a venerable concord lies open. The remedies for the longed-for restoration are clear. I urge you: let nothing be left undone. The work that has begun so well must be carried through to completion, and I trust that your continued efforts will see it done.
