Letter 25

HormisdasThe orthodox bishops|hormisdas
From: Hormisdas, Pope of Rome
To: The orthodox bishops [those already in communion with Rome]
Date: ~517 AD (April 3)
Context: A letter of encouragement to bishops who have remained faithful to Rome and Chalcedon during the schism, acknowledging their suffering and strengthening their resolve.

Hormisdas to the orthodox bishops.

God is indeed the special consolation of the faithful, and those who have devoted themselves to him with their whole mind never fail, even in the harshest circumstances. Yet I confess that I owe this expression of concern to the steadfastness of your commitment: just as I rejoice in your faithfulness, so I am bound to sustain it.

You have endured much. The pressure to conform, the isolation from colleagues who chose a different path, the political difficulties that come with standing firm — none of this has escaped my attention. I want you to know that Rome sees your struggle and honors it.

Hold fast. The cause you serve is not a human cause but a divine one, and the God who called you to this stand will not abandon you in it. I send you my encouragement together with my prayers, and I ask for yours in return.
