Letter 24

HormisdasUnknown|hormisdas
From: Hormisdas, Pope of Rome
To: All bishops in the Eastern provinces
Date: ~517 AD (April 3)
Context: A circular letter to the entire Eastern episcopate, calling them to remember their duty and return to communion with Rome — a bold assertion of papal authority during the Acacian Schism.

Hormisdas to all bishops established in the provinces of the East.

Even if my own efforts at admonition were to cease, you yourselves — mindful of your own office — should not carelessly neglect what every bishop ought zealously to observe for the salvation of his soul. The discipline of heaven's commandments should be evident in us not because someone else demands it, but because it belongs to our very calling.

Granted, there is merit in the man who follows good counsel. But how much greater is the honor of the man who arrives at the right course on his own, rather than being led to it — just as it is more distinguished to teach than to learn.

Let each of you remember in what vocation the Lord called you, and consider what is expected of you. It is a wretched thing to fall short of the standard your office proclaims, when the title you bear is not matched by your deeds.

I urge you, brothers: act now. The path to restoration is open. Return to the communion of the apostolic see, and let the unity we all profess become the unity we all practice.
