Letter 12

HormisdasHormisdas, Rome|hormisdas
papal authority
From: John, bishop of Nicopolis
To: Hormisdas, Pope of Rome
Date: ~October 516 AD
Context: John reports his election as bishop of Nicopolis after the death of Archbishop Alcison, and asks for papal recognition and communion — a sign of support for Rome from within the Eastern church during the Acacian Schism.

Copy of the report of John, bishop of Nicopolis. Delivered by his deacon Rufinus.

To my lord, all-holy and most blessed father of fathers, fellow minister and prince of bishops, Hormisdas: John sends greetings in the Lord.

My constant concern has always been to seek nothing beyond managing my own affairs and committing my familiar daily life to the anxious care of my duties. But since the judgments of God are "a great deep" [Psalm 36:6], as I know Your Beatitude also teaches — when our father and late archbishop Alcison was called by Christ, the prince of shepherds, to the mansions above, by a wisdom that he alone who is the Lord of all possibilities understands — the holy synod of good works and the clergy transferred to me the shepherd's lot.

Referring all things to God, who "makes the tongues of the stammering speak freely" [cf. Wisdom 10:21], I properly hasten to your prayers, so that in accordance with the custom of the apostolic see, you may deign to extend your care over all the churches to include that of Nicopolis as well, following your ancient spiritual arrangement. For when I asked that a letter of communion be given to me, all the orthodox bishops of our province eagerly agreed.
