Gregory to Olympius, concerning the people of Nazianzus.

The people of Nazianzus have lost their civic rights, and the order for the forfeiture of their title as a city has been signed by your authority. This has provoked something like a revolt among certain young citizens, whose passion I understand even if I cannot approve their methods.

I beg you: reconsider. These are good people, loyal subjects, faithful Christians. Whatever offense they have committed does not justify stripping them of the dignity their city has borne for generations. Restore their rights, and you will earn their undying gratitude and -- what matters far more -- the approval of God, who is the protector of the humble and the judge of the powerful.
