Letter 9219

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Aregius, Bishop of Vapincum [Gap]
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory consoles Aregius on the deaths of people dear to him; also writes to his archdeacon

My brother, I have heard with sadness of the deaths that have struck your household and community. Grief of this kind — when those closest to us are taken — has no easy remedy, and I will not pretend that words can do what only time and grace can do. What I can offer is the certainty that those who die in Christ are not lost to us permanently. The grief is real; so is the hope. Bear both honestly, as a man of faith must. I am writing separately to your archdeacon on a matter of administration, but I wanted first to write to you as a brother and a friend.
