Letter 9206

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Savinianus, Bishop of Callipolis
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory urges Savinianus not to let men of the castle of Callipolis, which belongs to the Roman church, suffer neglect

Brother, the people of the castle of Callipolis live on land that belongs to the Roman church, and their pastoral and material welfare is therefore a concern of this see as much as of yours. I am asking you not to neglect them. The fact that they live on church land does not make them less in need of the sacraments, the pastoral care, and the practical support that their bishop owes them. Visit them regularly, ensure they have access to clergy, and do not treat them as a burden simply because their situation is complicated. Every soul there matters as much as any in your cathedral city.
