Letter 9163
Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)→Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Anthemius, Subdeacon of Campania
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory orders Anthemius to summon Benenatus of Miseno and his accusers for an inquiry
I need you to summon Benenatus of Miseno along with all those who have brought accusations against him, and anyone else whose testimony is relevant to the inquiry. The charges against him must be examined properly — neither suppressed because the accused is well-connected nor exaggerated because his enemies are zealous. Get them all before you, take down their statements, and send me a full account. Do not attempt to resolve the matter yourself; my role is to make the final determination once I have the facts.
