Letter 9077

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Anthemius, subdeacon
Date: ~599 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Anthemius to investigate the will of Importunus, bishop of Atella, and to look after the church of Atella.

Gregory to Anthemius, subdeacon.

The late Bishop Importunus of Atella has died, and two things need attention. First, his will: examine it carefully. Bishops' testamentary dispositions are subject to oversight, and you are to ensure that what was left to the church or to charitable purposes actually reaches its intended destination.

Second, the church of Atella itself: with the bishop dead and no successor yet in place, the church needs someone to protect its interests and ensure the continuity of its ministry. You are to provide that oversight until a new bishop is ordained.

Be thorough and prompt in both matters.
Gregory
