Here begins the letter of Rechared, King of the Goths, addressed to the blessed Gregory, Bishop of Rome.

Rechared to the holy lord and most blessed pope, Bishop Gregory.

When the Lord in His mercy led us to break away from the impious Arian heresy, and the holy Catholic Church received us into her arms on the true path of faith, it was our heartfelt desire to seek out a man as deeply revered as yourself — you who stand above all other bishops in authority — so that you might commend to God in every way a thing so worthy and pleasing to Him on our behalf.

But we were occupied with the many cares of government, beset by various demands, and three years passed without our desire being fulfilled. After that, we chose certain abbots of monasteries to send to you. They were to present themselves before you, deliver the gifts we had sent for Saint Peter, and bring back a fuller account of your holy reverence's health. But as they hastened on their way and were nearly within sight of the Italian coast, they struck rocks near Marseilles and barely escaped with their lives.

Recently, we asked a priest whom Your Glory had sent as far as the city of Malaga to come to us. But he was detained by illness and was unable to reach our kingdom. Knowing with certainty, however, that he was sent by Your Holiness, we have sent a golden cup adorned on the outside with gems. We ask Your Holiness — as I trust you will be willing — to offer it as a gift worthy of the apostle who holds the first place in dignity.

I beg Your Highness, too, when the opportunity presents itself, to reach out to us through your sacred and treasured letters. How much I truly love you, I believe, is not hidden from you, the Lord giving you insight from the abundance of your own heart. It sometimes happens that those whom great distances of land and sea separate are nevertheless bound together in the closest affection.
