Letter 9038

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Fantinus, Defender of Panormus [Palermo]
Date: ~598 AD
Context: Gregory reminds Fantinus he had already ordered Bishop Victor not to let the synagogues of Panormus be harassed

I want to remind you that I have already addressed this matter with Bishop Victor directly: the synagogues of Panormus are not to be seized, damaged, or harassed. The Jews are to be treated with justice and are to be permitted to maintain their places of worship in peace. This is not a new policy — it has always been the position of this see that the conversion of the Jews must be sought through persuasion and the attraction of truth, never through coercion or the destruction of their property. If Victor has not complied with my earlier instruction, inform me immediately. I will not have the Church's name associated with unjust violence against those who have done no harm.
