Letter 8031

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Secundinus
Date: ~598 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Secundinus not to allow a monastery to fall under lay control.

Gregory to Secundinus.

A monastery is in danger of falling under the control or power of a layperson. I direct you to prevent this.

The principle is fundamental: monasteries are ecclesiastical institutions, governed by the church's law and protected by the church's authority. They are not to be treated as private property by lay persons, however powerful those persons may be, and however legal the instrument by which they might claim authority over the monastery.

If any layperson attempts to assert such authority, resist it firmly and bring the matter to my attention immediately.
