Letter 8027

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great

**From:** Gregory I, Bishop of Rome
**To:** Victor and Columbus, Bishops
**Date:** ~598 AD
**Context:** Addresses a situation involving Bishop Valentio, who has apparently behaved badly.

The behavior of Valentio the bishop cannot be ignored. I have received reports of what has occurred, and I want you both to investigate the situation carefully and thoroughly. Do not be swayed by his office or by the inconvenience of the inquiry. If the reports are accurate, appropriate action must follow. I expect a full account from you once your investigation is complete. The episcopate must be protected from those who dishonor it.
