Letter 8026

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, Bishop of Syracuse [Sicily]
Date: ~598 AD
Context: Gregory instructs the notary Pantaleon to recover the sacred vessels that clergy had sold.

Gregory to John, bishop of Syracuse.

Sacred vessels belonging to the church have been sold — sold by clergy who had no right to sell them. This must be addressed.

I direct that the notary Pantaleon investigate and recover these vessels. Where they have been sold and the purchasers can be identified, the sale must be undone and the vessels returned. Sacred vessels are not the personal property of individual clergy; they belong to the church and to the service of God.

The clergy responsible for this sale are to be held accountable for it through appropriate canonical proceedings.
