Letter 8016

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Marinianus, Bishop of Ravenna
Date: ~598 AD
Context: Gregory warmly commends Abbot Claudius who is returning from Rome.

Gregory to Marinianus, bishop of Ravenna.

The abbot Claudius is returning to you after his time in Rome. I commend him to you warmly — and warmly is the right word, for he has distinguished himself during his time here by the quality of his conduct and the substance of what he has shown himself to be.

A man who maintains his character when he is away from his own community — when the usual constraints are absent and the usual supports are not present — has a genuine character rather than a performed one. Claudius has been exactly who he appeared to be.

Receive him back with the appreciation he deserves. And give him my warmest regards.
Gregory
