Letter 8012

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Columbus, Bishop of Numidia [North Africa]
Date: ~598 AD
Context: Gregory commends Bishop Paul to Columbus.

Gregory to Columbus, bishop of Numidia.

My brother and fellow bishop Paul has come to my attention as a man worthy of your support and friendship. I commend him to you.

I ask you to receive him as a colleague and to give him whatever assistance his situation requires. A bishop operating in a difficult region [North Africa in Gregory's time was recovering from the Vandal period and facing ongoing challenges] needs the support of his fellow bishops, and Paul deserves that support.

I trust your judgment in this. Show him the charity that we owe to one another as bishops and as servants of the same Lord.
Gregory
