Letter 7079

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Anastasius, priest
Date: ~597 AD
Context: Gregory addresses a conflict between the father of a monastery and a bishop, asking that the dispute be settled.

Gregory to Anastasius, priest.

A dispute has arisen between the father of a monastery — its abbot or founder — and the bishop with jurisdiction over it. This kind of conflict is unfortunately common, and it is almost always harmful to everyone involved: to the monastery, to the bishop's authority, and to the church's witness.

I direct you to work toward a resolution. Both parties have legitimate interests; both are also capable of digging into their positions in ways that make resolution harder. Help them find the common ground that ought to exist between a bishop who wants his monasteries to thrive and an abbot who wants his community protected.
