Letter 7009

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, bishop [in Illyricum or elsewhere]
Date: ~597 AD
Context: Gregory thanks John for an alms sent to Rome, and offers to help him in matters of judgment involving the poor.

Gregory to John, bishop.

The alms you sent to Rome have arrived, and I thank you sincerely. The resources you have sent will go to those who need them most.

I want to offer something in return: in matters involving the poor and the dispensing of justice, I am willing to support you and to lend the weight of the apostolic see's voice to cases where justice requires it. Write to me when such cases arise.

Gregory
