Letter 6079

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Fortunatus, bishop
Date: ~596 AD
Context: Gregory again instructs Fortunatus that Jewish or pagan slaves who wish to be baptized cannot be prevented by their masters — Book 6 version.

Gregory to Fortunatus, bishop.

I return to the point I have made before, because it apparently requires emphasis: a Jewish or pagan master may not prevent a slave from receiving baptism. The soul's access to the faith cannot be blocked by the legal institution of slavery.

When cases of this kind arise in your diocese, support the converts and make clear to resistant masters that this is not within their authority.
