Letter 6064

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Theotistus [a layperson or official]
Date: ~596 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Theotistus to protect the priest John who was acquitted of heresy — Book 6 version.

Gregory to Theotistus.

The acquittal of the priest John in the matter of heresy stands. I have given him my protection and I again direct you to ensure that he is not harassed or subjected to further proceedings on the same grounds.

Those who brought the original charge must understand that a properly conducted acquittal is final. The church's procedures, whatever their imperfections, are not to be circumvented by simply bringing the same charge again.
