Letter 6040

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Donus, bishop
Date: ~596 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Bishop Donus to provide support for a cleric named Georgius if Georgius mends his ways.

Gregory to Donus, bishop.

The cleric Georgius has been living in a way that does not reflect well on his clerical status. However, I do not believe in abandoning men simply because they have failed.

If Georgius shows genuine signs of improvement — if he begins conducting himself as a cleric should — provide him with material support. Do not demand perfection as the condition; demand evidence of genuine effort and direction of travel.

The church's care for its clergy extends to those who have stumbled, not only to those who have never faltered.
