Letter 6011

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Fortunatus, bishop
Date: ~596 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Fortunatus about the deacon Gratianus of Venerosa, who is to be accepted by the Neapolitan church.

Gregory to Fortunatus, bishop of Naples.

The deacon Gratianus of Venerosa is to be accepted into the Neapolitan church. This is my direction; carry it out.

When a cleric who has been properly ordained in one place seeks a position in another, the receiving church is generally obligated to consider him fairly, especially when the pope has given his recommendation. Gratianus has that recommendation.
