Letter 5010

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Felix, Bishop
Date: ~595 AD
Context: Gregory threatens strict correction unless Felix obeys the primate of Prima Justiniana

I am writing to you with a warning that I intend to follow through on if necessary: if you do not comply with the legitimate authority of the primate of Prima Justiniana in the matters he has brought to your attention, you will face formal correction from this see. The primate's authority is real and binding in matters that fall within his jurisdiction, and a bishop who refuses to acknowledge that authority undermines the very structure of ecclesiastical governance. I hope this warning is sufficient, but I want you to understand that it is not a bluff. Comply, and we can put this matter behind us. Continue to resist, and I will act.
