Letter 5006

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Victor, Bishop
Date: ~595 AD
Context: Gregory orders Victor to restore Abbot Gregory after his long penance, and to deal with the nun Martia

The abbot Gregory has now served a long and serious penance for the negligence that warranted it. A penance is intended to correct and heal, not to destroy, and the purpose of this one has been fulfilled. I am directing you to restore him to his proper position, without conditions and without further delay. He has done what was required of him; give him back what he has earned through his repentance.

Regarding the nun Martia: the situation you have described requires your direct pastoral attention. Address it according to the canonical norms, and report to me if you encounter any difficulty in doing so.
