Letter 4074

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Januarius, Bishop
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory orders Januarius to audit the hospices, appoint men of integrity to run them, and consider Epiphanius

I am directing you to demand a full accounting from the hospices under your jurisdiction — when were they last audited, and what has become of the funds entrusted to them? Charitable institutions must be run with the same rigor as any other financial trust, and there is no excuse for allowing the accounts of hospices to go unexamined. The people those hospices serve depend on that rigor.

Additionally, I want the administrators of these hospices to be men of proven integrity and practical ability — not people appointed for their connections or their willingness to be accommodating. As for Epiphanius: consider him seriously for one of these positions, and report to me your assessment of his suitability.
