Letter 4065

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Maurus, Abbot
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory writes to Abbot Maurus on matters concerning his monastery

My dear Maurus, the monastery you govern is known to me, and the work of your community is something I follow with pastoral concern. I write to address the specific matters that have been brought to my attention and to offer such guidance as seems appropriate from this distance. The governance of a monastery is in many respects its own kind of bishop's work — you are responsible for the souls of your brothers, for the integrity of the Rule they follow, and for the witness the community gives to the wider church. Keep that responsibility constantly before you, and do not let the daily pressures of administration crowd out the spiritual substance that gives everything else its meaning.
