Letter 4058

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Theoderic and Theodebert [Frankish kings]
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory commends Augustine [of Canterbury] to the two young Frankish kings, noting that Augustine is authorized to bring some priests with him from neighboring areas.

Gregory to the most excellent lords Theoderic and Theodebert.

I have sent my servant Augustine [later the first Archbishop of Canterbury] on a mission to the English people [the Anglo-Saxons], and his path lies through your kingdoms. I ask you to extend to him your protection and support as he travels.

I have also authorized him, where it serves the mission, to bring with him priests from neighboring areas who can assist in the work. I ask you to facilitate this as well.

The conversion of the English peoples — a great nation who have until now lived outside the faith — is a work that, if it succeeds, will add multitudes to the church. Augustine is the instrument of that work. What you give him in practical support, you give to a cause that will bear fruit for generations.

Receive him well. Give him what he needs to continue his journey.

Your friend and servant,
Gregory
