Letter 4019

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Leo, Acolyte
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory commends the church of Saint Agatha in the Subura district of Rome to Leo's care

Leo, the care of the church of Saint Agatha in the Subura is now in your hands, and I want you to understand what that means. Venerable places are not merely buildings — they are centers of devotion that anchor the faith of the communities around them, sanctified by the prayers of generations and the blood of martyrs where that is relevant. Saint Agatha deserves a guardian who takes this seriously. Keep the church in proper order, ensure the liturgy is celebrated with reverence, and be a presence of stability and prayer for the neighborhood that surrounds it.
