Letter 4017

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Felix, Bishop
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory orders Felix to repay from church funds the 12 solidi used to ransom Tribunus the cleric

The cleric Tribunus was redeemed from captivity at a cost of twelve solidi, and those who paid his ransom are owed reimbursement. I am directing you to repay this sum from your church's funds without delay. The ransom of captives is one of the most pressing works of charity the Church performs, and those who advance their own money to accomplish it must not be left out of pocket. Make the repayment promptly and record it properly.
