Letter 4013

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Clemens, Bishop
Date: ~594 AD
Context: Gregory rules that if presbyter Adectatus left his church solely due to illness, he should be restored

The case of Adectatus the presbyter has been carefully considered. If it is clearly established that his departure from his church was due solely to illness — and not to any failure of duty, conflict with his superiors, or other cause — then he is to be restored to his position. A man should not lose his place because he was sick. However, if there are any other factors in his departure that have not been fully disclosed, those must be examined before any restoration is made. Get to the truth of the matter, and proceed accordingly.
