Letter 3084

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Bona, abbess
Date: ~593 AD
Context: Gregory orders the construction of a monastery and confirms all the gifts left to it by the priest John.

Gregory to Bona, abbess.

I direct that the monastery be constructed as planned, and I confirm all the gifts and bequests made to it by the priest John, who acted as my delegate in this matter. His dispositions on behalf of the monastery are to be treated as authorized and legally binding.

The construction of the monastery should proceed expeditiously. See that the work is done with proper care — not extravagantly, but solidly, in a way that will serve the religious community for generations. The facilities a monastery needs are not ornate ones but functional ones: a chapel, accommodation, common spaces, and provision for the works of charity the monastery will carry out.

Once the monastery is established and the community installed, report to me on its condition and needs.
Gregory
