Letter 3081

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Dynamius, patrician [governor of Provence]
Date: ~593 AD
Context: Gregory writes to the powerful patrician Dynamius of Provence about ecclesiastical matters in southern Gaul.

Gregory to Dynamius, patrician.

The church in southern Gaul faces challenges that require the cooperation of both ecclesiastical and civil authority. I write to you because your position gives you unique influence over the conditions in which the churches of your province operate.

I ask you to exercise that influence on behalf of proper church order: to support bishops who are trying to govern their dioceses according to the canons, to use your authority to prevent the abuse of church property and the exploitation of the poor, and to ensure that matters requiring ecclesiastical decision are handled through proper channels rather than by secular power.

The relationship between civil and ecclesiastical authority is most fruitful when each respects the proper sphere of the other while cooperating for the common good. I hope to have that relationship with you.

I commend to your particular attention any matters I have described in a separate communication, and ask that you act on them with your usual efficiency and justice.
Gregory
