Gregory to Columbus, Bishop.

Even before receiving your Fraternity's letter, I knew you by reputation to be a good servant of God. Now that your letter has arrived, I see even more clearly that what common report had spread abroad was well founded. I greatly rejoice in your merits — that your character and your deeds testify to a praiseworthy life.

Since I recognize these gifts as conferred on you by divine Providence, I congratulate you and bless God our Lord, who does not withhold the gifts of His mercy from His humble servants. I can honestly say that your Fraternity kindles in me such a flame of affection that I long to see you in person, and though we are physically apart, I am with you in heart. You know this is true from your own experience, for unity of spirit in love has the power to join people more closely than physical presence ever could.

That you are devoted to the Apostolic See with your whole mind, heart, and soul — of this I am now fully assured, though I knew it plainly even before your letter confirmed it. Greeting you with the affection you deserve, I urge you never to forget what you have pledged to the blessed Peter, Prince of the Apostles.

Press your primate at the provincial council to ensure that boys are under no circumstances admitted to sacred orders. The younger they are when they rush to climb to high positions, the more dangerously they will fall. There must be no buying or selling of ordinations. No one's influence or lobbying must be allowed to override these prohibitions. God is without question offended when anyone is promoted to sacred orders not on merit but through favoritism or — God forbid — bribery.

If you become aware of such abuses, do not keep silent. Confront them forcefully.

It is known, most dear brother in Christ, that the ancient enemy, who by cunning persuasion deposed the first man from the delights of Paradise to this life of care, and in him even then inflicted the penalty of mortality on the human race, does now with the same cunning, so as more easily to seize the flock, endeavour to infect the shepherds of...

The letters of your Fraternity, full of priestly sweetness, we have received at the hands of Rogatianus the deacon, the bearer of these presents. How we may presume on your Charity we gather from the disposition of our own mind with regard to you. Nor do we think that you love the Apostolic See otherwise than as it loves you. Whence it must needs be that we should more peculiarly commend those whom we know to be, as they should be, devoted in the Church of the blessed Peter, Prince of the...

We received at the hands of the bearer, your deacon, the epistle of your Fraternity, in which you informed us of what had been done among you with regard to the person of the bishop Paul. This has been done so late that he could not now have appeared here in person. For his Excellency also, our son Gennadius the Patrician, sent his chancellor to...

Inasmuch as it is manifest that the Apostolic See is, by the ordering of God, set over all Churches, there is, among our manifold cares, special demand for our attention, when our decision is awaited with a view to the consecration of a bishop. Now on the death of Laurentius, bishop of the church of Mediolanum, the clergy reported to us that the...
