Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)→Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Leontius, bishop
Date: ~593 AD
Context: Gregory directs Leontius to govern the church of Rimini while its bishop Castorius is ill and absent.
Gregory to Leontius, bishop.
The bishop Castorius of Rimini [a port city on the Adriatic] is ill and absent from his diocese. In these circumstances, his church needs someone to provide episcopal oversight. I therefore direct your fraternity to take responsibility for governing the church of Rimini until Castorius has recovered and is able to return to his duties.
This is a temporary assignment. You are to administer the church's affairs, ensure the continuation of its liturgical life, and address whatever matters cannot wait for the bishop's return. But you are acting on behalf of Castorius and in the interest of his church, not establishing any claim of your own over it.
Report to me if significant decisions arise that you believe require my input.
